i sound stupid asking but how do you do that? and is there a way to get it really thin?

Getting your hair thinned is great. Especially if you have a great hair stylist do it. They have these special scissors that they use to thin hair. I would recommend it if you have alot of hair or really thick hair. Afterwards your hair shouldn't be hard to style or anything, not if the stylist did it right. My suggestion is when you go to a stylist to get your hair done ask if they think you need your hair thinned. They will tell you their professional opinion. Because they are trained to know what your hair needs or doesn't need to look great.

it doesn't make it really thin but it helps (for me anyway) when you get your hair cut you can ask them to thin it.....i think it helps at least it helps me, it feels a lot thinner and lighter

In my opinion if you thin your hair out beware that you will have little hair sticking out everywhere if you do your hairstyle when its dry. my opinion "its the worst you can do"! i did it to my hair 1 year ago and it was awfull to get it straight. i hope this helped you make your decision. :) the way they thin your hair out is if they take some sizzors that cut your hair all over the special sizzors they use only cuts here and there so really its not thinning out cuz the root of it is still there. from my expirience.
