They use 'thinning scissors' they kinda look like they have teeth %26amp; only every second 'tooth' actually cuts the hair. Imagine having every second strand of hair cut, it takes the bulk out of the hair.
I hope I explained that clearly! lol.

What does "getting your hair thinned out" mean and how does a hair dresser do this?
It means that they razor the ends of your hair, usually layering it as well.
They use a razor and run it down your hair, removing the top layer of hair off if you get what I mean.
It's like using the edge of a pair of scissors on the side of your hair.
Your hair ends up thinner than it was before. :)

it just means layered or textured more of a style and making it thinner...this can be done in several ways such as basic scissors to chip into it or a razor which as a good effect and also thinning scissors

I've had it done two different ways.
One time, the hair dresser used thinning shears. Thinning shears cut some of the hair and leave the rest. It was horrible. I had a short hair cut, and then the lady came at me with the thinning shears, because I had curly hair. Snip. Snip. Down at the roots! Not the way to do it. I had all these random stalks sticking out, It was a mess. I think the lady just had no idea how to cut curly hair.
A good way to get your hair "thinned out" would be:...you know when you've got shoulder length hair, but your hair is thick, so it looks like a triangle shape. They go in and texturize. They cut at angles and remove the bulk of the hair from the ends, so that the cut has a more flattering shape. I have a feeling this is what people are referring to...not to my traumatic experience with the thinning shears.
